The Importance of Determining Your Skin Type

In order to allow your skincare products to work as effectively as possible, it is important to know your skin type, otherwise your skincare regimen will be out of sync.  Moisturizing Oily skin with the wrong moisturizer or being unaware that you in fact have Combination skin can create more problems for your skin rather than help eliminate them.  An individual’s skin type is determined by an assortment of skin characteristics, including but not limited to:

  • Water content: this influences your skin's elasticity
  • Lipid (oil) content: this influences the softness of your skin
  • Sensitivity level: this influences your skin reactivity and tolerance to substances like certain products, soaps, chemicals or clothing materials

Unsure of your skin type?  Check out the quick 4 step process below for helping you determine your skin type.

How to Determine Your Skin Type
4 Easy Steps You Can Do at Home

Follow these quick and easy steps to help you determine your skin type. Test regularly since your skin type can change over time, with different environment surroundings or even personal circumstances that affect your body's chemical balance.

Use a gentle cleanser (like Dermafirm's All-in-One Bubble Cleanser) to wash your face and pat dry. This cleans away any make-up, oils and dirt that may have accumulated during your day, giving your skin a fresh start.

Wait about an hour while your skin returns to its natural state. The characteristics that return will determine your skin type. Act normally and don't touch your face during this time.

Dab your face with a tissue or product that will absorb any oil on your skin. Pay attention to the “T-zone”—the area of your forehead, nose, and chin.
